Our story
Built by people who missed having a second reader
Velquor grew out of the ordinary difficulty of reading your own work clearly, and the difference it makes to have someone else read it first.
Where the idea came from
Velquor started with a simple observation from years spent editing long-form reporting: the writers who struggled most were rarely the weakest reporters. They were the ones who had spent so long with a story that they could no longer tell what a stranger would understand and what they'd only understand because they'd lived with the material for months.
We began offering structured second reads to a handful of independent reporters in Yogyakarta, mostly working on environmental and institutional stories that didn't fit neatly into a criminal-justice frame. The read-through model held up, and reporters kept asking for the same thing again on their next project.
What we do hasn't changed much since. We read carefully, ask honest questions, and help writers document their own process well enough that readers trust it without being told to.

A note that says "I wasn't sure who this was" respects your judgment more than one that rewrites your sentence for you.

Your pace, not ours
Reporting doesn't run on a fixed clock. Sessions move when the work is ready to be read, not before.

We treat every draft and source the way we'd want our own kept — quietly, and without exception.
